Syrian Hamsters
1 boy and 1 girl looking for homes
Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and cannot be kept in pairs or groups. They will fight and kill each other if housed together. They are nocturnal, but do come out in the evenings and some adjust to their owners’ schedules.
They eat a diet of seeds, grains and insects and complete, balanced diets are available. These can be supplemented with small pieces of fruit or veggies. An extra special treat for hamsters are mealworms, which can be purchased inexpensively from most pet stores. (If you are really adventurous, mealworms are extremely easy to raise for a continuous food source for your hamster).
Hamsters should be housed in an aquarium with a tight fitting mesh lid, minimum size 24”x12”x12” high, or in a specially designed hamster cage. When buying a cage, make sure there are no gaps between the bars and the base as hamsters are escape artists. Cages must have a deep base (minimum 6”) as hamsters need and love deep bedding for burrowing. Aquariums are better for this so you can have a 6-8” depth of bedding. They need a wheel, ramps and houses for enrichment and plenty of chew toys to keep their teeth healthy. Hamsters live 2 to 4 years.
